Mural print sales to support creation of new historic mural
VINCENNES, Ind.—A large downtown mural in Vincennes is gone, due to a tragic Dec. 17 fire, but a keepsake is available thanks to limited edition prints, signed by artist Randall Hedden, that are being sold to support the creation of a new historic mural in downtown Vincennes.
Originally completed on Oct. 27, 1978 on the side of the former Gimbel building, the Historic Vincennes, Indiana mural was restored by the original artist, Randall Hedden, on Oct. 7, 2005. The large mural was widely admired for decades by residents and visitors. Located on Second Street in the heart of the historic district in Vincennes, the mural depicted major heroes and scenes highlighting the community’s rich history as Indiana’s first city.
Proceeds from the sale of the limited edition signed prints will go to a community fund to create a new mural painted by Hedden in the downtown area. The fund will be administered by the Vincennes University Foundation that is also coordinating the Randall Hedden Arts Scholarship. A 1971 VU alumnus, Hedden established the scholarship in 2005 as part of his restoration of the mural.
“In cooperation with VU alumnus Randy Hedden, the VU Foundation and Old National Bank will be working together with others in the community to raise funds so that someday soon we can recreate Randy’s mural of historic Vincennes,” said Bumper Hostetler, president of the VU Foundation. “As the result of this tragic event, we have heard so many people lament over the loss of the Gimbel’s Corner and the beautiful mural that we thought it our duty to make Randy’s signed and numbered prints available for the purpose of raising the mural from the ashes,” Hostetler said.
Prints are $35 each or two for $50. Prints may be purchased at Old National Bank at the corner of 3rd and Busseron streets, Something Special at 423 Main Street, or at the VU Foundation at the corner of 3rd and College streets . Checks should be made payable to the VU Foundation.
Donations for the Mural Fund may also be made payable to the VU Foundation and sent to Vincennes University DC-38, 1002 N. Third Street, Vincennes, IN 47591.
The mural features Father Pierre Gibault, Col. George Rogers Clark, President William Henry Harrison, and scenes from Fort Sackville, Grouseland, and the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Vincennes.
